Alba tiene once años. Pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo en silencio y le gustan los animales diminutos. Ha aprendido a convivir con la enfermedad de su mamá, ayudarla a orinar por las noches, jugar en secreto para que no se despierte. Una noche, su mamá se pone mal y es internada en el hospital. Nadie puede hacerse cargo y envían a Alba a vivir con un papá a quien no ha visto desde que tenía 3 años. La convivencia con su padre es casi insoportable. La vergüenza, su primer beso, las visitas a la madre en el hospital, la ternura de los intentos del padre por acercarse a ella y el bullying en el colegio son estímulos que marcan el camino de Alba hacia la entrada a la pubertad y a la aceptación de sí misma.

Alba, an 11 year-old girl, passes her days in silence. She loves little animals. She has learned to cope with her mother’s illness, helping her to use the bathroom. Alba plays silently so that her mother can rest during the day. One night Alba’s mother gets worse, and has to be taken to the hospital. With no one else to take care of her, Alba is sent to live with her father, who she hasn’t seen since she was three years old. Living with her father is almost unbearable. Embarrassment, her first kiss, visits to mother in the hospital, Edgar’s tender efforts to get close to her, and bullying at school; these are some of the experiences that pave Alba’s journey to puberty and to self-acceptance.

Die elfjährige Alba verbringt die meiste Zeit schweigend. Sie hat gelernt, mit der Krankheit ihrer Mutter umzugehen, ihr nachts beim Gang auf die Toilette zu helfen und tagsüber nur leise zu spielen, damit ihre Mutter nicht gestört wird. Deren Zustand verschlechtert sich eines Nachts und sie muss ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert werden. Da sich niemand anderes um sie kümmern kann, lebt Alba nun bei ihrem Vater, den sie zuletzt gesehen hat, als sie drei Jahre alt war. Das Leben mit ihrem Vater ist nahezu unerträglich. Schamgefühle, ihr erster Kuss, die Krankenhausbesuche bei ihrer Mutter, die vorsichtigen Versuche des Vaters, sich ihr zu nähern und das Mobbing in der Schule – das sind einige der Erfahrungen, die Albas Weg in die Pubertät und hin zur Selbstakzeptanz säumen.
